What to expect from a Sound Therapy session

A clear guide to how a session unfolds, what you might experience, and answers to common questions.

From the outset, there is no need to talk about anything personal unless you choose to. Sound therapy is not about analysing or explaining. It is simply about noticing how you are feeling on all levels so the session can support you in the most effective way.

Before Your Session

Before your first session, you will be asked to complete a brief health questionnaire. This is only done once and helps me be aware of anything relevant so your sessions are safe and appropriate. There is very little else you need to do. Simply arrive in comfortable clothing and allow yourself time to settle.

At the Start

We begin with a gentle check-in using simple reflective questions. This helps us both understand how you are feeling physically, emotionally, and mentally in that moment. There is no pressure to share details. The intention is simply to notice and acknowledge where you are, so the session can be shaped to support you.

During the Session

You will lie down comfortably and rest while therapeutic sounds are played around you. As the session unfolds, the sound supports the brain in slowing into a theta brainwave state, which is associated with deep relaxation, creativity, and inner awareness.

This encourages an altered state of consciousness (ASC), a natural and restorative state where the nervous system can settle and the body can shift out of stress and into repair. You do not need to focus or do anything at all. Simply resting and allowing the sound to work is enough.

What You Might Experience

Every session is different, both from person to person and from one visit to the next. You may notice deep relaxation, mental clarity, emotional release, or physical tension softening. Some people experience moments of insight or a sense of answers to questions that have been sitting quietly in the background.

In the theta state, people may experience different aspects of altered awareness, such as imagery, a sense of spaciousness, emotional processing, or profound stillness. Theta brainwave activity is especially beneficial for nervous system regulation, emotional integration, creativity, and deep rest.

You may feel a lot, a little, or nothing obvious at all in the moment. All responses are completely normal.

After the Session

At the end of the session, we take a few moments to gently reflect on how you are feeling in the present moment. I may also offer simple aftercare guidance, and occasionally a gentle between-session practice to support what has surfaced and help the benefits of the session continue to unfold before your next treatment.

FAQs

Do I need any experience with sound therapy?
No experience is needed. You don’t need to prepare or know what to expect. Simply arriving as you are is enough.

What happens during a sound therapy session?
You’ll lie down comfortably and rest while therapeutic sounds are played around you. The session is designed to support relaxation and nervous system regulation, with no effort required from you.

Do I need to talk about anything personal?
No. There is no expectation to talk or share personal information. A brief check-in helps guide the session, but you are always in control of what you choose to share.

What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to relax easily. You’ll remain fully clothed throughout the session.

How might I feel during or after a session?
People often feel calmer, more grounded, or deeply relaxed. Some notice emotional release, mental clarity, or physical tension easing. Experiences vary and can be different each time.

What if I don’t feel anything?
That’s completely normal. Some people notice subtle changes later rather than during the session itself. There is no right or wrong response to sound therapy.

Is sound therapy safe?
Sound therapy is a gentle, non-invasive practice suitable for most people. You’ll complete a brief health questionnaire before your first session to ensure it’s appropriate for you.

Does sound therapy replace medication or medical treatment?
No. Sound therapy does not replace medication, medical care, or any other treatments you may be receiving. It is a complementary approach designed to support wellbeing alongside existing healthcare.

How many sessions will I need?
Everyone is different, but many people begin to notice a shift after around three to four sessions. Some people feel changes sooner, while others benefit from ongoing sessions for continued support. We can explore what feels right for you as you go.

Can sound therapy help with stress or anxiety?
Many people find sound therapy supportive for calming the nervous system and reducing stress. It is not a medical treatment, but can be a helpful complementary approach.

Will I be asleep during the session?
Some people drift into very deep rest or light sleep, while others remain aware throughout. Both experiences are perfectly fine and equally beneficial.

What happens after the session?
We’ll take a few moments to reflect on how you’re feeling. You may also be offered gentle aftercare guidance or a simple between-session practice if appropriate.

Can I ask questions before booking?
Absolutely. You’re very welcome to get in touch if you’d like to ask anything or check whether sound therapy is right for you.
