What to expect from a sound therapy session

Sessions take place in a calm, quiet space in Bishop’s Stortford.

For 1:1 sound therapy, we begin with a short check-in before you lie back and receive the sound, helping your nervous system slow down and settle.

Sound bath experiences are more relaxed, with no check-in. You simply lie back and switch off.

Sessions are available for individuals or two people. There is nothing you need to do. Just rest and receive.

How sound therapy helps with stress and anxiety

Sound therapy works by supporting your nervous system to slow down.

When you’re feeling stressed or anxious, your system can stay in a constant state of alert. Sound helps guide it into a more settled state, where your body and mind can begin to relax.

From there, many people notice:

  • less mental noise

  • reduced tension in the body

  • a greater sense of calm

  • more space before reacting

These effects are supported by research from the British Academy of Sound Therapy and related fields.

Hello!
I'm Katy, founder of Sound Therapy Studio

I created this space to offer something many people struggle to find in everyday life, a place to properly slow down.

My path into sound therapy came through a major life shift. During a difficult period in my life, I found myself searching for something that could help me process, regulate and navigate what I was carrying. Sound became one of the few things that allowed my mind and body to soften without effort.

That experience stayed with me and eventually led me to change career and train professionally in sound therapy. What I love about this work is that it meets people where they are.

Some clients come because they feel overwhelmed, anxious or mentally exhausted. Others simply want an hour away from the noise and pressure of daily life. Often, people arrive carrying far more tension than they realised.

My approach is calm, grounded and supportive. Sessions are designed to help the body move out of stress mode and into a state where rest, clarity and regulation become possible again.

I work with a combination of crystal bowls, Himalayan singing bowls, gongs and monochord, using sound in a gentle and intentional way depending on what each person needs.

I trained professionally with the British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST), completing over 150 hours of training, supervised practice and assessment as part of a practitioner-level diploma in sound therapy.

"The session was powerful in the best possible way. The sound felt expansive and grounding at the same time, helping me release tension I didn’t realise I was holding. Afterwards, I felt deeply rested and more aware of how much tension I had been carrying."

How Sound Therapy Supports Anxiety

Sound Therapy Studio Crystal Bowls

Sound therapy uses specialist instruments played in therapeutic ways to support physical, emotional and mental regulation. In structured 1:1 sessions, carefully applied sound is combined with reflective dialogue to increase awareness of how anxiety is presenting in the body and mind.

During sessions, the brain may move into slower alpha or theta states, sometimes described as an altered state of consciousness. This is a natural and restorative state that the body enters daily. In this state, the nervous system can begin to settle and shift out of ongoing stress activation.

The intention is not simply to induce relaxation, but to support regulation and help the nervous system move out of repetitive stress patterns over time.
